Dave Barry’s 2015 Year in Review

From the Miami Herald:
Was 2015 the worst year ever? Yes, yes it was.

Sometimes we are accused — believe it or not — of being overly negative in our annual Year in Review. Critics say we ignore the many positive events in a given year and focus instead on the stupid, the tragic, the evil, the disgusting, the Kardashians.

OK, critics: We have heard you. This year, instead of dwelling on the negatives, we’re going to start our annual review with a List of the Top 10 Good Things That Happened in 2015. Ready? Here we go:

1. We didn’t hear that much about Honey Boo Boo.

2.

OK, we’ll have to get back to you on Good Things 2 through 10. We apologize, but 2015 had so many negatives that we’re having trouble seeing the positives. It’s like we’re on the Titanic, and it’s tilting at an 85-degree angle with its propellers way up in the air, and we’re dangling over the cold Atlantic trying to tell ourselves: “At least there’s no waiting for the shuffleboard courts!”

Are we saying that 2015 was the worst year ever? Are we saying it was worse than, for example, 1347, the year when the Bubonic Plague killed a large part of humanity?

Yes, we are saying that. Because at least the remainder of humanity was not exposed to a solid week in which the news media focused intensively on the question of whether a leading candidate for president of the United States had, or had not, made an explicit reference to a prominent female TV journalist’s biological lady cycle.
Always an entertaining read. I love how much he slams on the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, and Tom Brady.

Adele shows up to Adele impersonator contest in disguise

From Kottke.org:
This is all sorts of charming. BBC held an Adele impersonator contest and arranged for Adele to compete in disguise as a woman named Jenny. I love the looks on the women's faces when they realize what's going on. See reaction below

Ted Cruz Knows His Princess Bride

From Patterico's Pontifications via H/T at Ace of Spades HQ:
And can recite it from memory - with the correct voices.
He does the voices and everything.

He’s a nerd! (That’s a compliment.) And without a doubt the coolest guy running for President.

Yet another reason to vote for this guy!

Supergirl TV show

I had a chance to watch the debut of the new 'Supergirl' show in CBS and have o say, I'm not sure where they are going with the show. I know that Hollywood wants to create a female-centric superhero TV show, since there hasn't been one since 'Wonder Woman' in the late '70s. There have been a few tries to reboot 'Wonder Woman' with no success. Yes, the was 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer,' but she wasn't originally a comic book based hero, but actually more of a spoof of the whole superhero genre. Many feminist seemed to be pleased, since Kara Zor-El can go toe-to-toe with the baddies, since she also has the same powers as her more famous cousin. But does she really need to do that. They place her in the office of a Daily Planet type newspaper, but with a predictable twist. Her boss is female (surprise), totally self absorbed (really surprised), and ridiculously over the top with unrealistic demands. Essentially, a female J. Jonah Jameson. Jameson, comes across as a typical blowhard boss, but Kara's boss seems to be a cheap rip off of Anna Wintour, without the cool British accent and charm.

One has to wonder, will the audience accept or tolerate the weekly beating shew will take as she brings in this weeks baddie? The Producers of the show seem to think so, but will the audience after 20 weeks of it? I think not.

Listen kids, not everyone is a winner

From CNN:
So I am glad to hear that Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison has come out against meaningless awards. Over the weekend, he revealed to his fans that he was returning the two sports "participation trophies" his sons, 8 and 6 years old, received for simply being on the team:

"I came home to find out that my boys received two trophies for nothing, participation trophies! While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die, these trophies will be given back until they EARN a real trophy. I'm sorry I'm not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned and I'm not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best...cause sometimes your best is not enough, and that should drive you to want to do better...not cry and whine until somebody gives you something to shut u up and keep you happy. #harrisonfamilyvalues"

Harrison's decision was spot on. What a crock it is to give out participation trophies.
I'm glad Harrison got a lot of support from many fans and foes alike.

Steelers’ James Harrison Sends Back Sons’ Participation Trophies: ‘Everything in Life Should Be Earned’

From Breitbart Sports:
James Harrison is not a fan of participation trophies.

The Steelers linebacker had a lot to say on an Instagram post Saturday, after posting a picture of two participation trophies his sons had received.

Harrison went on to say he’s sending back the trophies until “they earn a real trophy.”

“While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die, these trophies will be given back until they EARN a real trophy. I’m sorry I’m not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned and I’m not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best,” he wrote.
I love it!

Participation trophies are for 6 year olds.

Quote of the Day

Inigo Montoya: My father was slaughtered by a six-fingered man. He was a great swordmaker, my father. When the six-fingered man appeared and requested a special sword, my father took the job. He slaved a year before it was done.

[Shows the Man in Black the sword]

Man in Black: I've never seen its equal.

Inigo Montoya: The six-fingered man returned and demanded it, but at one tenth his promised price. My father refused. Without a word, the six-fingered man slashed him through the heart. I loved my father. So naturally, I challenged his murderer to a duel. I failed. The six-fingered man left me alive, but he gave me these. [strokes the scars on his cheeks]

Man in Black: How old were you?

Inigo Montoya: I was eleven years old. And when I was strong enough, I dedicated my life to the study of fencing. So the next time we meet, I will not fail. I will go up to the six-fingered man and say, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
