In recent days, Democrats have blasted Republicans on a number of issues, staking out positions that have one thing in common: they are unpopular with voters. The DNC put out an ad attacking Republicans for talking about “radical Islamic terrorism,” which the Democrats said was “inciting fear.” Just one problem: 60% of voters say we are at war with radical Islamic terrorism. It's a strategy to excite their base. Not win the general.
..........................
It’s a novel strategy, not just taking unpopular positions but doing so aggressively, stridently and contemptuously. Who knows, maybe it will work. But I doubt it.

Why Not Let Obama Shut Down The Government?
From John Hinderaker at Powerline Blog:
That should be the response to every question about the shutdown threat by The Dear Leader!
This proves what a smart thinker and strategerist Ted Cruz is.
Instapundit adds:
President Obama has announced that if the Republican Congress does not include $500 million for Planned Parenthood in the upcoming continuing spending resolution, he will veto the legislation and shut down the government. (Of course, for better or worse, only a small part of the federal government will actually be laid off and cease operations.) To which I say: is that a threat or a promise? From this guy, it's a promise.
I can’t follow the logic. Apparently they think that Republicans will be blamed by voters when the President vetoes legislation funding the government’s operations. That seems inconceivable to me. If Republican politicians are so bad that they can’t make clear to voters who closed down the government, we need new politicians.I agree, FIRE the Republican Leadership in Congress!
Ted Cruz makes this point forcefully in Politico:BOOM!Thus, President Obama’s position is that, if Congress doesn’t give a half-billion dollars to a politically favored private organization currently under criminal investigation, then he will shut down the entire government.
.......................
If Republican leadership actually tried to win, we would vote on one bill after another funding specific parts of the federal government. Fund it all, and let Democrats explain why they are filibustering funding for vital services to give $500 million to a private organization under criminal investigation.
That should be the response to every question about the shutdown threat by The Dear Leader!
This proves what a smart thinker and strategerist Ted Cruz is.
Instapundit adds:
Well, we do – particularly when the GOP has never suffered at election time* over a government shutdown. (Which aren’t even real shutdowns.)
* Even after the 1995 shutdown, which GOP leaders look back on in much the same way your grandparents think of the Great Depression. But Republicans “lost only nine House seats, a relatively trivial number after a net gain of 54 in 1994. They actually added to their majority in the Senate, picking up two seats in the 1996 cycle.”

Democrats See No Irony in Running Against Themselves
From John Hinderaker at The Powerline Blog:
Today Joe Biden delivered a populist oration on the occasion of Labor Day. Biden ripped the stagnant American economy of recent years:So, Joe is blaming Republicans, even though his party was in charge of the White House ...... Deflect, deny, distract. SOP for the Democratic Part.
“I’m mad, I’m angry,” Biden thundered, attacking the U.S. economy as “devastating for workers.”That’s what we’ve been saying for the last 6 1/2 years. Where has Biden been all this time? Oh yeah, that’s right–he’s been the vice president. The economy is lousy for most workers because of a lack of economic growth. In my view, slow growth is largely the consequence of the administration’s economically ignorant policies, in particular, over-regulation. But for the unsought (by the administration) fracking revolution, conditions would be even worse.
So how can the vice president run against his own administration? Biden is particularly angry about the tax code:
“Let me tell you something, man,” Biden said. “The tax code’s not fair. The wealthy aren’t paying their fair share.”.................. Joe Biden’s party controlled both houses of Congress and the White House from 2009 until 2011. They could pass anything they wanted to, and did: Obamacare and the “stimulus,” in particular. If they wanted changes to the tax code, they should have enacted them. And has Biden been proposing any changes to the tax code during the 6 1/2 years he has been the number two man in the Obama administration? Not that I’ve noticed.
